Skilled Worker Visa: Your Gateway to Working in the UK
The Skilled Worker visa has replaced the Tier 2 (General) visa and is now the primary immigration route for non-UK residents seeking employment in the UK. This visa allows eligible individuals to work for an approved sponsor in a qualifying role, offering a streamlined path to contribute to the UK workforce.
At Muya Consultancy, we’re here to guide you through every step of the Skilled Worker visa process. Here’s everything you need to know:
How Can You Become a Skilled Worker in the UK?
To qualify for a Skilled Worker visa, you must meet the following requirements:
- Job Offer: You need a job offer from a UK employer that holds a valid Sponsor Licence. The job must meet the required skill level and be listed among the Home Office’s eligible occupations.
- English Proficiency: You must prove your English language ability at B1 Level or above.
- Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS): Your employer must issue you a CoS, which confirms the details of your job and sponsorship.
- Salary Requirements: Your salary must meet the minimum thresholds, which are the higher of:
- £38,700 per year.
- The “going rate” for your occupation.
Working Flexibly on a Skilled Worker Visa
You can work up to 20 hours per week in a second job or for your own business without additional permissions. If you plan to work beyond 20 hours per week or take on a completely new job, you’ll need a new CoS from your second employer and must apply to update your visa accordingly.
Does the Skilled Worker Visa Count Toward Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)?
Yes! After living in the UK continuously for five years under a Skilled Worker visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), provided you meet all other criteria.
Skilled Worker visas are typically granted for up to five years. At the end of this period, you can choose to extend your visa or apply for ILR to settle permanently.
Traveling Outside the UK
There are no restrictions on the time you can spend outside the UK under the Skilled Worker visa. However, keep in mind that when applying for ILR, you must meet the absence limit: no more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period during the five-year qualifying period.
Can You Change Jobs on a Skilled Worker Visa?
Yes, changing jobs is possible. However, you must apply to update your visa if any of the following apply:
- You are changing employers.
- You are moving to a role that is no longer on the Immigration Salary List.
- Your job is changing to a different SOC occupation code.
You can apply for a visa update up to three months before your new job starts, allowing you to continue working in your current role while your application is processed.
Can Your Family Join You in the UK?
Absolutely! Skilled Worker visa holders can bring their dependents to the UK. Eligible dependents include:
- Your spouse, civil partner, or unmarried partner.
- Children under 18 years old.
- Children over 18 if they are currently in the UK as your dependents.
